  • Perfectly Spiced: A balance of smoky, garlicky, and slightly spicy flavors makes them irresistible.

Ingredient notes and easy swaps

Ingredients for sweet potato wedges cooked in an air fryer include sweet potatoes, oil, and seasoning.

Below are my ingredient notes (including substitutions) for the main ingredients in this recipe and how you can make it your own. The recipe card below provides a complete list of all ingredients and measurements.

  • Sweet potatoes: Choose firm, unblemished sweet potatoes for the best texture.
  • Avocado oil: helps the wedges crisp up beautifully, but you can substitute olive or peanut oil.
  • Spices:
    • Garlic powder and onion powder – Add flavor.
    • Chili powder and cayenne pepper – Bring a touch of smoky heat. Adjust to taste.
    • Salt and black pepper – Essential for seasoning. Use kosher salt if preferred.

How to make the best Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

Follow these simple steps to make perfectly crispy sweet potato wedges every time:

  1. Prep the potatoes: Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes well (no need to peel!). Cut them into wedges by first halving them lengthwise, then cutting each half into equal-sized wedges. Aim for about 16 wedges per potato so they cook evenly.
  2. Season: In a large bowl, whisk together the avocado oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and cayenne. Toss the sweet potato wedges in the spice mixture until well coated.

  1. Air fry in batches: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F. Arrange the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket (work in batches if needed). Air fry for 10 minutes, then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy.

  1. Serve: Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce like ketchup, ranch, or avocado cilantro lime dressing.

Shortcut to supper (time-saving tips)

  • Pre-cut the sweet potatoes a day ahead and store them in a water-filled container in the fridge to prevent browning.
  • Season them in advance and refrigerate in a zip-top bag so they’re ready to air fry when needed.

What to serve with Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

These flavorful wedges pair beautifully with a variety of dishes. Here are some ideas:

  • Pork: A healthier alternative to fries with pulled pork burgers.
  • Chicken: Serve alongside Pecan Crusted Chicken or Air Fryer Chicken Quarters
  • Dipping Sauces: Try ranch, honey mustard, or avocado cilantro lime dressing for an extra punch of flavor!
  • Sweet Potato Tacos: Stuff them into warm tortillas with avocado, black beans, and cotija cheese for a tasty vegetarian meal.

Fun twists and tasty variations

  • Oven-Baked Version: No air fryer? No problem! Bake at 400°F for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Sweet and Savory: Swap the chili powder for cinnamon & a drizzle of maple syrup for a fall-inspired twist. Or, add smoked paprika for a deeper, richer taste.
  • Parmesan Crusted: Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese after air frying for an extra layer of flavor.

Storing, reheating, and freezing tips

  • Storage: Let leftover wedges cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Reheating: To keep them crispy, pop them back in the air fryer at 350°F for 4-6 minutes.
  • Freezing: Allow wedges to cool completely, then freeze in a resealable bag for up to 6 months. Reheat from frozen at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.

Recipe FAQs (your questions answered)

Can I make this recipe without an air fryer?

Absolutely! Bake them at 400°F for 20-25 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes?

Nope! The skin gets nice and crispy in the air fryer, plus it adds extra fiber.

Why aren’t my wedges crispy?

The most common reason is overcrowding the air fryer basket. Always cook in a single layer, and pat dry the wedges before tossing them with oil.

Pro tips for foolproof results

  • Use evenly sized wedges so they cook at the same rate.
  • Don’t skip to flip your potatoes to get crispy edges on all sides.
  • Use a kitchen towel under your cutting board for extra stability when slicing sweet potatoes.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer! Overlapping wedges will steam instead of crisping up.
  • Want extra crispy wedges? Increase the temperature to 375°F for the last 2 minutes of cooking.
